We lived in bay area of California till my daughter is 2 years old. She was a healthy kid then, she did not go to daycare. After we moved to North Carolina, she started having colds/cough and diagnosed of allergies in couple of months, she is on allergy medicine (Allegra) on a daily basis. She also goes to daycare here. She had bronchitis infections, pneumonia, croupy coughs, upper respiratory infections. She is on nebulizer treatments on and off for the past 3 or 4 months.
Can anyone help me in comparing these two places allergies wise? Is North Carolina making my daughter sick or is it the daycare? Will her health get better if we go back to California? In general are the allergies less in bay area? Please help.
Thanks — Amy, North Carolina

I suffered from such severe allergies to mold in the 80s and early 90s that a huge retention cyst had to be removed from my sinus. In 92 I left Florida and moved to Arizona. No more allergy problems. Last year, 2005, I moved back to Florida and my allergies have returned with a vengeance. Thinking of returning to Arizona! - Chris, Florida
In parts of Texas, “early rains caused a bigger blooming season of pollen producing trees and grasses,” according to Dr. Daunne Peters at Clinics of North Texas.
In southern Arizona, allergist Dr. Leonard Schultz says, “This year, because of the dryness, the poor air quality, the fact that it’s been unseasonably warm, there’s more particular matter in the air.”
Here in Arkansas, Dr. Ann Murphy says, “With all the wind and all the dust… [and] since we really haven’t had a winter to speak of, we are getting allergies and sinuses prolonged.”
California has a different problem. They wish for a few days of our low humidity. Heavy rains have brought mold problems to many areas of California according to the American Academy of Allergy Ashtma and Immunology.
So if you are checking allergies in a new climate, keep in mind that the unusual weather this winter has affected the norms in many areas.
I came from Russia. There I had asthma and allergy attacs only seasonal. In USA I lived in Denver,Co,IN North Carolina, in NYC. Everywere I had the worst experience whith my asthma and allergy. I think that the best solution for mi is to come back home to Russia. - Liobov, Russia
I suffer EXTREME allergy/asmtha problems and, have been told the weather in Guadalajara Mexico would be good for me? are you able to confirm this for me? I currently live in Palm Springs Ca. - Aaron, California
Has anyone lived in a variety of places, and continued to experience allergy problems to some degree in all of them?
Have any of you discovered a place where your allergy symptoms completely went away and stayed away through the entire allergy season? When you returned to the climate where allergies were troublesome, did your allergy symptoms return as well?

Don’t forget to consider health issues other than allergies when evaluating a climate change. Here in Arkansas many of us dread the hot humid days of summer. The air is heavy and it is hard to breathe. Mold counts soar, grass pollen thrives, and it becomes an allergy sufferer’s nightmare. During the winter we have short periods of dry humidity, but snow and ice keep things moist for the most part.
However, this is proving to be an extremely dry winter for us. Wild fires and burn bans prevail in our region. We frequently hear the words “record-breaking lows” to describe the humidity and rainfall levels. I’m getting a taste of what winter feels like in a more arid climate.

I have never experienced allergies (beyond that of petting a cat) in any place I have ever lived–and I have travelled to 40 countries and lived in seven. However, I visited southern California for the first time, to see my father, who is in the San Bernardino Valley. Each time I visit (in the summer), severe allergies hit me and I am almost immobile for days. Claritin D helps for a while, but I have to take it every day. Any advice? — ZB
