North Carolina, California (Silicon valley area)

We lived in bay area of California till my daughter is 2 years old. She was a healthy kid then, she did not go to daycare. After we moved to North Carolina, she started having colds/cough and diagnosed of allergies in couple of months, she is on allergy medicine (Allegra) on a daily basis. She also goes to daycare here. She had bronchitis infections, pneumonia, croupy coughs, upper respiratory infections. She is on nebulizer treatments on and off for the past 3 or 4 months.

Can anyone help me in comparing these two places allergies wise? Is North Carolina making my daughter sick or is it the daycare? Will her health get better if we go back to California? In general are the allergies less in bay area? Please help.

Thanks — Amy, North Carolina

  1. Where in California did you live, because the coastal area is humid, which is worst for mold and dust mites allergies, but the inland area is dry, which is worst for pollen allergies. I don’t know how is the weather conditon in Carolina. Also check what kind of flooring does the day care center have? It is hard floor or carpet?

  2. Trust me — it’s North Carolina. I spent 8 months away from here visiting my in-laws in california, and from the moment I stepped off the plane, I was not bothered by allergies.

As soon, as my husband and I drove back across the NC borders, I was sick again. We have been back here three months now and I have been very sick with allergies, recurrent sinusitus, bronchitis, strep throat and a host of other ailments. My husband now has to leave the Army, so we can move to the west coast for my health. I now have allergy-induced asthma rfom living here.

My allergist’s only real suggestion was to move, so that is what we are doing.

Best of luck with your daughter.
