Nebraska, Alabama, California, Maryland, South Dakota

Grew up just South of Omaha and had horrible allergy problems since the age of 8. Not so bad in the winter. A change of diet that avoided additives, preseratives, corn syrup, and others… helped A LOT.

A move to Hunstville, Alabama when I was 30 didn’t change much for the allergy problems, but definately a little.

A move to coastal San Diego County, California was the best! I had to watch out for mold in an apartment I had that was just a block off of ocean cliffs, but that was nothing to worry about, just keep it clean.

I now live in southern Maryland and have virtually no problems, but there is a little bit a tightness in the chest that only goes away in southern California.

Missouri, California

I live in Missouri and this is the worst I have been sicker here than I was in California. I’ve been here for 13 years and it seems like I’m getting sicker and sicker every year.I don’t know where a person can go to escape. When I lived in California I lived in the Bay Area (the San Fransisco region), Northern California,L.A.,and the high dessert and I was sick in all of them. I’ve suffered with this all my life.

They say I’m allergic to dust and mold in addition to having many environmental allergies. There are times when I’m in a car and drive down a street and will become violently ill for no apparent reason to the point of passing out. I have learned that when this begins to happen I need to immediately pull over and go inside one of the larger resturants because they usually have a clean air system (Casa Gallarda saved my life) and I will normally recover in 5 to 10 minutes.

Live where it makes you happy and manage the side effects

I have suffered with hives and allergies all my life. Born and raised in the southeast-TN, FL, NC. As an adult I chose to move around the country to find healthier ground. I went to the Northeast - too cold - so I moved to Las Vegas in 1997.

I thought the dry heat would help. Once you get past the first year of nose bleeds and sinus dryness and dehydration, it does get a little better becuase there are no real season changes. Although there are many new allergies I had never felt before - Watery burning eyes for weeks from the dust and blooming olive trees (olive trees which became such a air hazard they were banned from the county).

The first year was bad but after 8 years I decieded to move back southeast to NC. Mainly due to the pollution (air qaulity) in Las Vegas has gotten so bad. Now that I have been back the first six months have been as it should getting use to the changing of seasons again. In six months I have had two colds which put me into the antibiotic slide. One drug to the next always ends up giving me horroable hives/angioedema for weeks.

Now in my mid 30’s I am finally learning how to deal with my body reactions to environment and medications with all the side effects. Live where it makes you happy and manage the side effects of everthing else. Life is to short to be stuck indoors or in one place. Enjoy life! — GW, North Carolina

Chicago, Florida, maybe Spain or France?

Does anyone have experience with asthma in the Spain/ southern France climate? We have a child that deals with repeated bouts all winter long in Chicago, and are considering a warmer climate. Florida has not been better, mold is a problem. Any input? — Davd, Chicago

Jamaica, St. Louis, maybe Alaska?

I’m from Jamiaca by way of the Bahamas and I’m a chronic, perennial allergy sufferer. My allergens are mold, ragweed, trees and dust. I’m sure there are some food ones thrown in as well.

Anyway I’m living in St. Louis since 1999 and it has been just awful. I’ve had two surgeries because my nasal passages keep growing shut and I’m always stuffy and breaking out in hives despite being on zyrtec, allergy shots, rhinocort and singulair. My ENT says he doesn’t know how to help me and my allergist keeps trying different combinations of drugs that wokrk for a time and then stop.

Alaska sounds like the place for me! What do you think? — Hillary, St. Louis
