Missouri, California

I live in Missouri and this is the worst I have been sicker here than I was in California. I’ve been here for 13 years and it seems like I’m getting sicker and sicker every year.I don’t know where a person can go to escape. When I lived in California I lived in the Bay Area (the San Fransisco region), Northern California,L.A.,and the high dessert and I was sick in all of them. I’ve suffered with this all my life.

They say I’m allergic to dust and mold in addition to having many environmental allergies. There are times when I’m in a car and drive down a street and will become violently ill for no apparent reason to the point of passing out. I have learned that when this begins to happen I need to immediately pull over and go inside one of the larger resturants because they usually have a clean air system (Casa Gallarda saved my life) and I will normally recover in 5 to 10 minutes.

I also have motion sickness and belive it or not I have this wierd thing where I start to get sinus pressure and congestion when I sit in front of a computer monitor for any extended period of time. I know instinctively that all these things are related somehow but what I don’t know is if I’m the only one. If there’s anyone else like me e-mail me maybe the two of us can form a support group (smile) or just talk to another person who really understand. — AM, Missouri

  1. I, too, live in Missouri. Every year it has gotten worse. Went to an ENT doctor who specializes in allergies and his three suggestions were: 1. take shots for the next five yrs 2. have an operation (no gurantees) or 3. keep taking medication and live w/it. I have switch medications (Allergra D, Singular, Claritin) & still have very few clear days. I thought I was the only one with the dizziness. Also my ears pop continously from the sinus pressure. So count me in your support group. I understand your suffering.

  3. Feeling better? Gosh, I don’t know. Just some days are better than others. Funny, though, just spent a week a Florida and felt great! No poping, no dizziness, none of the sick, tired “IM i going to pass out.” feeling. Started driving back, went through GA, fine, Tennessee, OK, KY OK, IL - stuffiness returned. Cross into MO at STL and bam!! sick, sick, sick. Crossing the Mississippi River is the key, I believe.

  4. I have lived in Missouri my whole life and sick much of time. I have had tests that show I get huge hives (extreme allergy) from grass and am moderately allergic to mold and house dust. I have been diagnosed with a sinus blockage, take medication, cannot tolerate allergy shots (they make me worse), and do not want to make my nose bigger. I have become sicker since I started working and I believe it is partly because of the pollution from the car exhaust, that there may be more dust in the office than I think (I do not see people dusting or wiping their desks) and the paper may have dust, too. The carpet is vaccumed once a week with the dust and pollen foot traffic of 30 or more people. These are just extra things for me, I believe. Now, I stay indoors and that helps by reducing my total allergen exposure since pollen is really my most potent allergen. I am adopted, but I really think I am from a northern climate (arctic region) and natural selection does exist…I am from a place with no grass. It is discouraging to have so little control. I am trying to start my own business and hope this will help since I was much better when I stayed at home.
