Would your allergies be better in a different climate? Read others' experiences and share your own.

Hi Cari,
I bought a house in Hawaii a few years ago. It is on the Hilo side, (wet side) of the Big Island of Hawaii. I have lived in Honolulu as well. I had severe asthma and allergies as a child, I grew up in Connecticut, and the cold weather aggravated it.
Before I moved to Hawaii, I lived in the San Diego area and in Ensenada, Mexico. My allergies and asthma were much better there.
Hawaii has alot of foliage and mold due to the heavy rainfall, especially in Hilo. I returned to San Diego a few days ago, and I am still suffering from a very severe allergy attack I had in Hilo.
I went to the dry side of the island to Kona during my stay, and felt alot better. However, the foliage there seems to aggravate my allergies and asthma as well. I think a dry climate is better for your child. Any other questions please feel free to ask. Also the “vog” from the volcano (smoke that hangs over Kona) can be irritating as well.
After moving from San Diego to Maui 4 years ago, I can tell you that allergies can be a problem depending on how wet or dry it is. This year Kihei is having red dust in the air and lot of folks at work (myself) included have been having lots of trouble. One member of my lodge had his wife in the hospital for 3 weeks as this aggravated her asthma.
I am on Kauai for 4 months having come from Maine. In Maine I had an allergic reaction twice a year but it was manageable. Now, on Kauai, something has bloomed and there is an allegen that is really tough. No voice, throat full of phlegm, gunked up eyes, headache, asthma symptoms. There is a fair amount of moisture here and I am staying in a hotel with adequate air conditioning. If I am in the a/c it’s a little better but I work outside and one has to go out sooner or later! I would not reccomend Kauai for an asthmatic. Definitely a lot of mold and things bloom ALL year.
I grew up on Oahu until I was nine. A couple years before leaving, I began having allergic reactions and I developed asthma. Finally it became so bad that I developed a severe case of bronchitis which then turned into pneumonia…which prompted our move to Arizona. I lived on Long Island, NY for a year and suffered severe allergies and bronchitis as well. So far, Arizona has been the best place for me to live (medically speaking).
I am sad to hear Hawaii may not be best for my asthma. Living in Wa. [ the northwest] has been rough w/ Asthma as I seem to get Bronchitis 5-6 times every wet season/ winter which can last 5-6 months. I will now investigate Arizonia as I need to get healthy. If anyone can give me some positive feedback re. Hawaii & Asthma related upper respiratory infections[ie. incidence of ?] please let me know ! I am an RN and can definatly find work where ever I want…..
i am looking up allergies in hawaii and came across your posting. My husband has severe allergies/asthma (severe enouigh that his parents moved from iowa to arizona when he was ten-in 1975) that was when people didn’t bring in plants and sod and stuff- back when it was pure desert. Now, with all the vegetation to make it seem green he is suffering as much as ever! you have to remember to- it’s a valley. with the increase in population the polution gets trapped in the valley and you can suffer severely during certain times of the year… My husband did a scratch test about 10 years ago. he’s allergic to 99 out of 100 things. the doctor told him to leave AZ and not to come back. we are just now making that move…. hope this is helpful!
I was interested in the asthma concerns for Hawaii. My grandson has asthma related to allergies, and he is allergic to most everything. He is 22 and wants a change of scenery from AZ. He has a friend in Hawaii so he wants to move. Thanks to you whom have shared your stories of asthma in Hawaii! I will share it with him so he can go prepared.
Thanks for the posts regarding this topic. I googled Asthma in Hawaii because my aunt is taking my 9 year old to hawaii for a week in August. She suffers from excema and asthma. More so in the winter and spring then the summer. We live in Northern California and have been here her entire life. She will be taking her nebulizer with alburterol solution, her preventive inhaler, and her allergy medications with her on the trip. If there is anyone that can offer any more advise that would be great. Thanks!
