I grew up on Oahu until I was nine. A couple years before leaving, I began having allergic reactions and I developed asthma. Finally it became so bad that I developed a severe case of bronchitis which then turned into pneumonia...which prompted our move to Arizona. I lived on Long Island, NY for a year and suffered severe allergies and bronchitis as well. So far, Arizona has been the best place for me to live (medically speaking).

I am on Kauai for 4 months having come from Maine. In Maine I had an allergic reaction twice a year but it was manageable. Now, on Kauai, something has bloomed and there is an allegen that is really tough. No voice, throat full of phlegm, gunked up eyes, headache, asthma symptoms. There is a fair amount of moisture here and I am staying in a hotel with adequate air conditioning. If I am in the a/c it's a little better but I work outside and one has to go out sooner or later! I would not reccomend Kauai for an asthmatic. Definitely a lot of mold and things bloom ALL year.

After moving from San Diego to Maui 4 years ago, I can tell you that allergies can be a problem depending on how wet or dry it is. This year Kihei is having red dust in the air and lot of folks at work (myself) included have been having lots of trouble. One member of my lodge had his wife in the hospital for 3 weeks as this aggravated her asthma.

Hi Cari,

I bought a house in Hawaii a few years ago. It is on the Hilo side, (wet side) of the Big Island of Hawaii. I have lived in Honolulu as well. I had severe asthma and allergies as a child, I grew up in Connecticut, and the cold weather aggravated it.

Before I moved to Hawaii, I lived in the San Diego area and in Ensenada, Mexico. My allergies and asthma were much better there.

Hawaii has alot of foliage and mold due to the heavy rainfall, especially in Hilo. I returned to San Diego a few days ago, and I am still suffering from a very severe allergy attack I had in Hilo.

I went to the dry side of the island to Kona during my stay, and felt alot better. However, the foliage there seems to aggravate my allergies and asthma as well. I think a dry climate is better for your child. Any other questions please feel free to ask. Also the "vog" from the volcano (smoke that hangs over Kona) can be irritating as well.
