Any area in Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo that gets the coastal marine layer/ fog will have mold problems. There are severe mold problems at both of the family housing sites at UCSB. I was constantly sick there and so were my neighbors. But if you live back from the coast it is ok! The further back the better. For example, in Santa Barbara, back by Cathedral Oaks road, they don’t get much fog. San Luis Obispo is inland but since I don’t live there I don’t know if the fog travels inland there.
As far as other allergies, Santa Barbara is a bad place to live for allergy sufferers. April and Fall tend to be the worst times. There is a lot of pollen- supposedly that comes in from the desert- and since it never rains, the air never really gets refreshed. We found, though, that even with all the pollens, when we got rid of the carpet in our bedroom and put in vinyl flooring, we didn’t suffer as bad and only needed saline eye drops occasionally on polleny, windy days, but no antihistamines.
