European travel: asthma in Germany, France, Belgium, Amsterdam, 2010

In the summer of 2010, I traveled for one month to Munich, Chamonix, France….Normandy, Waterloo, the Ardennes in Belgium and finally, Amsterdam. I never used the precautionary prednesone that my doctor sent with me….I don’t remember using my inhaler ….not once. I told my doctor about it when I got back to the States and once again, began wheezing. I want to plan another trip for next year, but I wondered if anyone else had these breathing problems in certain cities….I will go to Europe in 2012 and I’ll stay the whole summer if I have to…..just to get into a city where I don’t have to be on medications and inhalers. The summer of 2011 in France, Italy and Ireland was absolutely horrible and I thought I would die at least twice. Does anyone else know of cities that are easy on asthmatics? – part 2 of 3 posts about asthma at home in SC and abroad -submitted by Khaki Berry in South Carolina

Best climate for eczema – reader finds Germany good

I think it depends on the person and “type” of eczema. For me, hot weather (sweat) sets it off. It’s already a fire/inflammation of the skin, so for me the most mild of climates seem to be best.

Somewhere where the winters aren’t too long or cold and the summers don’t get terribly hot. I’m in Germany now and my skin has never been better.

Yes lots of plants (so allergies can be an issue) but as long as I take my meds and I don’t go out and roll in it, I’m good!

Mold allergies in Oregon?

I have lived in the Midwest most of my life and have been doing a lot of research comparing Oregon to Wisconsin & Minnesota. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2008. Heat and humidity as well as extreme cold worsen MS symptoms. I’ve also lived in Northern Virginia, England, and Germany. I think a milder, less extreme climate might be better for my MS, but I’m also sensitive to mold. Any thoughts, please? – Christine, Wisconsin

German visits Missouri, finds home in Hawaii “perfect for people with allergies”

I was born and raised in Germany and I suffered of allergies every summer. I think I am allergic mostly to weeds and grasses. I moved to Hawaii 9 years ago and since then all of my allergies have disappeared. I think Hawaii is perfect for people with allergies, because a lot of the weeds, trees and grasses that you’ll have to deal with on Continental US simply don’t grow there. I am convinced of this, because presently I am in Kansas City/Missouri and I have a terrible time with my allergies. So, I know the allergies haven’t just disappeared. Since I haven’t had to deal with it in Hawaii at all in the past 9 years I can only conclude that moving to Hawaii was indeed a geographic solution to the problem. I hope this helps somebody! — Simon, Hawaii

England, Europe, Germany, Florida

My hayfever (pollen allergy & asthma): The worst area: England, Cornwall, Devon, Central Europe. The best area: German Baltic coast, Florida — Mirek, Europe

Mexico, New Mexico, Germany

We moved because of the military from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Germany. My son had allergy/asthma issues before but nothing like now. He was retested since we have been here and he is allergic to mold which we did not test for in NM. His medication has been doubled since being here and he is now on 5 medicines at the age of 6. The Army is looking into moving us from Germany back to the states to a hotter/drier climate. Germany is very damp, and moldy. But we are yet to find out the best place for my son. What we do know is he was significantly better in NM. — S.K.H., Germany
